The Past Shapes Your Present and Future

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

This William Faulkner’s quote implies that the events of the past continue to have an impact on the present and future. Even though we may think of the past as something that’s over, its influence can still be felt.

This quote is often used as a reminder that history and the actions of our ancestors continue to shape our world.

Our personal histories influence us as well. As the old adage goes ― you don’t know where you are going, until you know where you’ve come from — and there’s much to be said for integrating the past.

We don’t want to linger and live there, but we want to acknowledge what has happened and claim the wisdom and lessons that we’ve gleaned. If we don’t look at and understand the past, unresolved issues will arise again, surprising us with their appearance – both in our personal lives and in our nations and world.

There’s power and intelligence in owning your story, interpreting it, finding meaning in it, and choosing the narrative.

We give a nod to our past and look hopefully to the future.

Hope and health,
